In 1188 King Henry II and Phillip II of France chose red and white crosses to identify English and French Troops during the kings crusade. Throughout the 13th Century it started to be used by numerous leaders who wanted to be associated with crusades. It is claimed that Ricard the Lionheart adopted both the patron saint and flag during a crusade to Genoa.

St George was born in 280 and was a personal guard to Emperor Diocletian in the Roman army. He was however executed for his Christian beliefs. He is recognised to have freed a town from a dragon who demanded human sacrifice in return for water. St George killed the dragon saving the chosen princess that was to be sacrificed. Each year St Georges day is celebrated on the 23rd of April with the flag flown to celebrate the saint.
