All of our flags of Ireland are manufactured in house at our head office in Cambridgeshire, allowing us to ensure that all of our Irish flags are made to the highest standard and quality. History of the Irish Flag
The Irish flag or Irish tricolour was first flown by Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848, he was a leader of the Young Irelanders and flew the flag from the Wolfe Tone Confederate Club in Waterford City. The flag was gifted to him by a group of French women he visited in Paris when he visited them to congratulate them on overthrowing the king.
He and other Young Irelanders were inspired by the revolutions in Paris, Berlin, Rome and others around the world. At this time Ireland was deeply divided between Catholic and Protestant Beliefs as well as feeling the effects of the great famine which killed over a million people. The white in the centre signifies a lasting peace between the orange and green. The green represents the Irish Republicanism and the orange the Irish Protestants.
The tricolour only officially became Ireland’s National Flag in 1937 despite being used in the Irish War of Independence.
